The Dual Roles of Cow Comfort in the ‘Get Lame – Stay Lame’ Hypothesis
نویسنده
چکیده
Although there is a general understanding that there is a link between poor cow comfort and lameness, the mechanisms by which one leads to the other are poorly understood. The objective of this article is to review the environmental impacts on hoof health in the dairy cow, describing the potential interactions between cow comfort and the trigger factors which ensure cows ‘get lame’ and the subsequent interactions once cows become lame which ensure that she ‘stays lame’. These are the dual roles of cow comfort. The discussion will make the case that it is the duration of daily standing activity, combined with the type of surface that the cow stands upon, that are the principal components of cow comfort that need to be addressed if we are to break the cycle of ‘get lame – stay lame’.

Due to its detrimental effect on cow welfare, health and production, lameness in dairy cows has received quite a lot of attention in the last few decades-not only in terms of prevention and treatment of lameness but also in terms of detection, as early treatment might decrease the number of severely lame cows in the herds as well as decrease the direct and indirect costs associated with lamenes...

متن کاملBehaviour of lame cows: a review
Claw horn disorders, infectious diseases of hooves and leg injuries cause lameness in dairy cows. However, such diseases as sole haemorrhages, sole ulcers or white line diseases, cause clinical lameness. Lameness reduces milk production, the fertility of cows and also causes earlier culling of cows, as well resultings in a deterioration of their welfare. In this review we focus on the impact of...
متن کاملWhy is it getting more difficult to successfully artificially inseminate dairy cows?
Successfully using artificial insemination (AI) is defined as getting cows pregnant when the farmer wants them in-calf and making the best use of appropriate genetic potential. Over the past 30 to 50 years, the percentage of animals in oestrus that stand-to-be-mounted (STBM) has declined from 80% to 50%, and the duration of STBM from 15 h to 5 h; both in parallel with a reduction in first-servi...
